In 1937 Republic Pictures premiered the first onscreen outing of the classic
comic strip crime-fighting, yellow-hatted detective created by Chester
Gould, Dick Tracy. In this classic 15 chapter serial, G-man Dick Tracy (Ralph
Byrd) is pitted up against a criminal organization known as the Spider Ring,
that carry-out a vast array of terrible plots - from taking down the San
Francisco Golden Gate Bridge with an under wraps sonic device, to hijacking
plans for a high-speed aircraft, to cheating the markets with the spread of
counterfeit bills - all at the behest of their mysteriously veiled leader, The
Lame One. When the gang’s actions lend them to a federal investigation
led by Tracy, along with his companions, Steve Lockwood (Fred Hamilton)
and Mike McGurk (Smiley Burnette), The Lame One instructs his gang to set
their sights on Tracy’s brother, Gordon (Richard Beach/Carleton Young) in
an effort to halt the heroic G-man.
